Gospel of Matthew - Mary, the mother of Jesus

Join us as we explore what it was like to be the mother of Jesus.

Who was Jesus' mom?
What was it like being the mother of Jesus?
How might God form us today through her story?

We have a number of scriptures that teach us about Mary and her relationship with her son, Jesus. So we broke it into 4 different chunks of her life:
-Expectant Mother
-Mother of more than Jesus
-Mother during Jesus' ministry
-Mother at Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection

Best yet... four moms who are part of our house churches share what they imagine it would be like to be the mother of Jesus during that part of Mary's life and how God might form us through her story.

May Jesus the Messiah keep forming us into the people of God - called to act and be a blessing to all the families on earth.

Gospel of Matthew - Jesus is King!

Join us as we begin our study of the Gospel of Matthew.

Matthew describes his own story as one of an "outsider". Someone who the religious people of the day didn't think was good enough for Jesus. But Matthew held on to Jesus' teaching that "healthy people don't need a doctor, sick people do". It's why we try to create a culture of "No Perfect People Allowed".

As we start of the Gospel, Matthew wants us to understand that Jesus is the Messiah, the King, the King of Kings. Jesus is the fulfillment on the promises that God made to Abraham and to King David.

Who are the hero's of your family tree? What are the stories that you'd rather not tell? Matthew tells it all for Jesus' family tree - showing us through the highs and lows that God is faithful.

May Jesus the Messiah keep forming us into the people of God - called to act and be a blessing to all the families on earth.

The Prophets - Jesus the Prophet

Join us as we explore Jesus as a prophet.

Matthew 23:37-39 are the last words that Jesus says to the crowds:

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God's messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn't let me. And now, look, your house is abandoned and desolate. For I tell you this, you will never see me again until you say, 'Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!'"

These words bring us to the end of our seven month study of the prophets and into Holy Week.

May we continue to listen to Jesus as a prophet, as he calls us to come back to God today and become the people God dreams we can be.

The prophets were known for calling God's people to come back to God. In this sermon we explore the temptations Jesus faced (Matthew 3:13-4:11) to take his attention/affection/trust/service away from God.

How do those same temptations impact us?

The Prophets - Jesus

In Luke 4 we read that Jesus understood himself as a prophet - "I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his hometown" - and the fulfillment of what the prophet Isaiah had written:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
and that the time of the Lord's favor has come."

The prophets of the Old Testament called people back to God from living lives of idolatry and injustice. In the scripture we read today, Jesus calls his hometown to let go of thinking of themselves as insiders and others as outsiders.

May God continue to form all of us as we meditate on God's love and faithfulness to all people.

The Prophets - Hosea

Join us as we explore the prophets of the Old Testament.

Today we look at Hosea. Many of the prophets were asked by God to do things that would appear foolish to the crowd that observed their behavior. Hosea is at the top of that list.

Through his words and his own life, Hosea paints God as the abandoned one. While God keeps trying to love his people, they keep running to other things/gods with their interest/affection/trust.

"I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings." This was God's call to his people. Not just to know information about God. But to be intimate. Connected.

May God continue to form all of us as we meditate on God's love and faithfulness to his people.

The Prophets - Ezekiel

Join us as we explore the prophets of the Old Testament.

Today we look at Ezekiel. At the same time Jeremiah was back in Jerusalem being a prophet to the remnant, God came to Ezekiel while he was in captivity in Babylon and called him to be a prophet to his fellow Judean exiles.

Our focus will be Ezekiel 36:26, "I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart."

God's grace shines through in this scripture/prophet as God chooses to have mercy - not for anything that those in exile did - but simply because God is merciful (Ezekiel 20:44).

May God continue to form all of us as we become more aware of God's mercy.

The Prophets - Isaiah

Join us as we explore the prophets of the Old Testament.

Today we look at how Isaiah called the whole community to come back to God. Specifically we will look at chapter 58 where Isaiah calls out the people for worshipping God for the purpose of getting what they wanted.

True worship is listening to God and acting on it.

At the heart of this teaching is listening to God's desire that his people would act on caring for the oppressed, the imprisoned, the hungry, and the homeless. Mother Teresa, and Father Greg Boyle are examples of people who listened and acted - they remind us that we belong to one another.

There is no following of Jesus that will not lead you to connecting with the oppressed. And if somehow we do fail to connect with the oppressed, scriptures throughout the Bible teach us... we are the ones who are missing out.

May God continue to form all of us as we listen and act.

The Prophets - Jeremiah

Join us as we explore the prophets of the Old Testament.

Today we look at how Jeremiah called the whole community to come back to God. As we follow Jeremiah's life we learn how difficult it was to be a prophet, and how God formed Jeremiah through the ups and downs.

Through Jeremiah's example, we explore, "How do we keep hope today?"

In an increasingly polarized culture, we also look at the importance of God speaking through the prophets to the collective - the whole community - the whole culture. This challenges all of us to stop thinking of ourselves in splits of "us" and "them", but as part of the whole, and how we will act together for the good of the whole.

Easter - Jesus' Death & Resurrection... and how it changes us

He is Risen!

No one wants to go through Good Friday to get to Easter.
... even if you know Easter will happen.
We try to get away from pain. We try to avoid suffering.

In our Easter sermon, Pastor Daron invites us to explore the 3 acts of Jesus' death & resurrection:
Act 1 - the one time historical event of Jesus' death & resurrection and Jesus' choice to connect with the pain of the world and his choice to embrace the suffering put in his path.
Act 2 - baptism - our choice to be baptized into Jesus' death and resurrection. We don't get to new life, without first going through the suffering of letting go of control.
Act 3 - the ongoing transformation that death & resurrection can bring to our lives.

The founders never wanted to go there - it was Plan B when their first and second options fell through. They only stayed three weeks before being kicked out by a mob. Is that possible - to spend three weeks with people who have never heard about Jesus - get kicked out by a mob - and still have that community want to keep becoming a church? It's a story of being dependent on the Holy Spirit, having good news to share, and trusting that sometimes Plan B in our lives turns out better than what we could have planned on our own.

John also writes so we begin to think of ourselves as "the disciple Jesus loves" and we understand that Jesus sends us into the world just as God sent him into the world. Proximity. What does it matter? Could it be the gateway into understanding and participating in Jesus' upside-down kingdom? As Jesus is praying for us (people who will believe someday because of the disciples testimony), he asks God to help us understand that God loves us as much as God loves Jesus! God loves me as much as he loves Jesus? Could it be true? And what does that mean?
